I have developed a kindred relationship with Wrath over the past few years to a well established brotherhood. But, never once has this inhibited my ability to give an unbiased review of any FYC Records release, especially his own releases with Dødsferd. In fact, I tend to be a bit more judgmental when it comes to the art that my close friends or relatives are involved in the creation of.

In the case of Dødsferd’s latest release “Asphyxiating Late Night Sessions: Collaboration with Sarvok”, I listened to the album over and over again, but never did I find one aspect of this album disappointing or lacking in all of the qualities I have come to expect from Wrath. The experience was quite the opposite. I found myself in awe of Wrath and m.Sarvok, and their ability to come together to create one of the finest Depressive, Atmospheric Black Metal masterpieces I have ever heard.

I was not sure what to expect when I first received the tracks from Wrath. But, what I found was that the songs on “Asphyxiating” were sonically different, yet they somehow fit neatly in with everything Dødsferd has ever released. The album is a true testament to the honest experimentation that has been a constant catalyst throughout the span of Dødsferd’s existence, with its themes of despair and unrestrained hatred for the callous, self-serving actions of humanity.

Wrath’s lyrics have consistently been thought provoking, and made more captivating by his agonizing screams. But on “Asphyxiating Late Night Sessions”, the message seems even more dire against the contrast of the ambient and spacey instrumentation provided by m.Sarvok. This juxtaposition makes for an extremely enthralling performance. Albeit the music leaning more into Sarvok’s atmospheric territory, the ever mournful vocal presence of Wrath anchors the songs to the truest nature of Dødsferd.

Although this is not the first time that Black Metal and the world of ambient music have collided, few projects have been as successful as Dødsferd’s collaboration with Sarvok in delivering five tracks as immersive and captivating as can be found on “Asphyxiating Late Night Sessions”
