Drunk Motherfuckers - The Drunk Sessions (2023)
Album Review By E.N. Wells, February 26, 2023.
You may know him as Wrath as he is the mastermind behind the Black Metal outfit Dรธdsferd. He has also been a part of many other musical projects while also being the founder and chief operator of FYC Records and Distro. Well, Wrath or rather Father W. (as he is known in this outfit) has returned once again with one of those projects in the form of Drunk Motherfuckers. Now, when you hear the name you might be inclined to think of the party rock bands from the 80โs. If so, you would be wrong. For those of you who follow my blog, I reviewed the bands EP that was released last year (2022) and you already know what to expect. And, for those of you who follow Father W, you also know what lies aheadโฆ somewhat!
Yes, the songs are alcohol fueled but, unlike those party rockers from the 80โs, the music that Drunk Motherfuckers creates has more in common with the gloomy Seattle scene of the 90โs. And, though the music differs from the music Father W creates with Dรธdsferd, those depressive elements are still very present. The new EP is called The Drunk Sessions and is an acoustic album quite like the unplugged albums also heard in the 90โs. The album was originally released in 2009 (then titled Drunk and Wasted), but on February 28, 2023, FYC Records are re-releasing the EP with a new title and a previously unreleased track from 2010.
The musicianship on the album is solid and tight knit. And, Wrathโs puts himself out there vocally. As a vocalist myself, I know all to well how easy it is to hide my insecurities behind harsh screams and gutteral growls. It is a completely different monster to let your true voice be heard for all of the world to scrutinize. Father Wโs clean vocals are not only raw and pure, they are also haunting and emotional.
Hidden among these alcohol induced, depressive gems is a cover of Alice In Chains Would?. Where many bands try their hardest to recreate a song that is a near exact carbon copy (while failing horrendously), Drunk Motherfuckers do well to make this cover their own, molding the track neatly to fit in with the EPโs other four tracks. Although the song isnโt a perfect replica of the original, the band do well to keep the original vibe that AIC carried during the MTV Unplugged sessions.
All in all, I find The Drunk Sessions EP very refreshing. I love it when artists spread their wings and fly freely into other realms of music. Especially when those artists are well known for being on the Extreme side of Metal and they dive headlong into more somber, and dare I say, softer sides of music. Itโs hard to listen to this album and not reflect on oneโs self while diving deep into your own subconscious thoughts. I highly recommend you give it a listenโฆ or twoโฆ or three. What I am saying is, you should definitely buy The Drunk Sessions.
