Y&T — Earthshaker

𝐅𝐑𝐎𝐌 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐂𝐑𝐘𝐏𝐓𝐒 - 𝐂𝐄𝐋𝐄𝐁𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐏𝐀𝐒𝐓 𝐀𝐋𝐁𝐔𝐌 𝐑𝐄𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐒𝐄𝐒 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐘 𝐨𝐟  𝐇𝐀𝐑𝐃 𝐑𝐎𝐂𝐊 & 𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐕𝐘 𝐌𝐄𝐓𝐀𝐋

42 years ago this week, Yesterday & Today officially became known as Y&T”

On June 30, 1981, Y&T released their third full-length studio album “Earthshaker” via A&M Records.

“Earthshaker” is their first album under the name Y&T, after shortening it from Yesterday and Today, and their first album with A&M Records.

(Joey Alves, live in Palo Alto, California, 1982)

A mix of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal songs, AllMusic's Eduardo Rivadavia named this album as the best release in the band's career, the album most faithfully representing "the power and energy" of Y&T's "legendary concerts".

Background:

As Dave Meniketti has said in numerous radio, television, and magazine interviews over the past four decades, a new record deal ("which took forever" [to secure]) in 1980 with A&M Records prompted the band to shorten their name to simply Y&T, as influenced by their encores where fans would chant "Y&T, Y&T, Y&T."

(Dave Meniketti, live in Palo Alto, California, 1982)

The band's first two studio albums under A&M, “Earthshaker” (1981) and “Black Tiger” (1982), did not gain mainstream exposure.

(Phil Kennemore, live in Palo Alto, California, 1982)

Songs off these two albums still make up a significant part of the band's live shows.

The album was re-released in 2006.

Noteworthy:

Contrary to popular belief, the Japanese Heavy Metal band Earthshaker did not take their name from this album, rather they took it from the song "Earthshaker" off of Y&T's first album “Yesterday and Today”.
