25 years ago today, The Haunted put a “Choke Hold” on us, as we felt our “Soul Fracture” from their “Hate Song”!

On this day (June 23) in 1998, The Haunted released their debut full-length studio album “The Haunted” via Earache Records.

Background:

On July 27, 1996, Patrik Jensen co-created the band with Adrian Erlandsson, who had just become an ex-member of his former band, At The Gates, due to the band's split the day before. They had made their demo, called Demo '97, in 1997.

The band were signed to Earache Records and subsequently released their first album, the self-titled debut “The Haunted”. The album resulted in The Haunted being praised as Newcomer of the Year by several magazines, and the album being called Album of the Year by Terrorizer Magazine. The Haunted made a respectable live reputation staging the Swedish metal scene, as well the international scene, touring the UK with Napalm Death.

After the release of this album, Peter Dolving and Adrian Erlandsson, both left the band in 1999, the former focusing on a solo career and the latter joining Cradle of Filth. Their replacements were Marco Aro and Per Möller Jensen.

Tracks 1–4 and 12 were part of the band's greatest hits album, “Warning Shots”.

Peter Dolving and Adrian Erlandsson both returned on different releases, with Dolving on “rEVOLVEr”, and Erlandsson on “Eye of the Storm”.

Critical Reception:

AllMusic gave The Haunted’s self-titled debut a four out of five stars, with Jason Ankeny stating;

“While sacrificing none of the ear-splitting intensity of the band members' past work in At the Gates, The Haunted's self-titled debut further hones the melodic approach of records like “Slaughter of the Soul”; for all of the ferocity of cuts like "Chasm," "Blood Rust," and "Forensick," there's no denying their complexity and craftsmanship.”
