A Tale of Bronze Creation

Album Review by E.N. Wells, February 27, 2023.

Whenever I think of an instrumental album, I think of the usual shredders like Steve Vai or Joe Satriani. In my experience, soaring guitar solo’s are the trademark of such albums. I don’t however, associate Doom laden passages or sludgy, droning guitar riffs with this movement. So, when I found out that this album was, for the most part an instrumental album (with the exception of a sample of the Martin Luther King Jr. speech) and that it had no hints of guitar shreddy noodling or Progressive Rock elements, I was skeptical to say the least. Upon first listening to The Giants Fall though, I found that I was pleasantly surprised by what I had just heard.

Newly signed to the Greek label Fucking Your Creation Records, The Giants Fall’s eponymously titled debut (written and recorded by sole member Mikebass) delves much deeper than your typical instrumental album. Though you won’t find the usual egocentric guitar wankery (I say this with respect), you will find deeply moving instrumental passages which evoke a sense of awe and wonder. The sounds you hear are reminiscent of the slow dirge of Stoner bands like Acid King, Electric Wizard and the early Doom of Cathedral, mixed with droning riffs of bands like Mastodon. All the while, ethereal synths are on display throughout the whole of the album. But, what I find most intriguing is that the lead instrument is not the usual suspect when dealing with an instrumental album. No, for The Giant’s Fall’s debut, the bass is the lead instrument. And to full effect. The bass lines are strikingly emotive and melodic, with great attention to detail.

In fact, the five tracks put forth could very well be used as the soundtrack to post-apocalyptic films such as The Road featuring Viggo Mortensen, where his character wanders the land, scavenging to survive while evading those who would do him and his son harm. Anyone who has seen this film will have a firm understanding of what I am saying, once they listen to this album. While the album itself does tell a story, it isn’t one of human nature. This is a story of mythological proportions. The album is actually based around the tale of the ancient Greek giant, Talos, and his slow fall into the realm of Hades. And, The Giant’s Fall do well to engage the listener in this epic tale of Talos’ tragic decline without the use of words.

In my opinion, The Giant’s Fall hit a home run with its first outing and this is most definitely and album that I will be revisiting again and again for awhile to come. I also look forward to this project’s future endeavors.
