The Abyss - Summon the Beast (1996)

FROM THE CRYPTS - CELEBRATING PAST ALBUM RELEASES in the HISTORY of HARD ROCK & HEAVY METAL…

On November 4, 1996, The Abyss released their second full-length studio album Summon the Beast via Nuclear Blast.

The album was produced and recorded by Peter Tägtgren at The Abyss Studio in July 1996.

Background:

The second release by this Hypocrisy side project (same members on different instruments), features Mikael Hedlund on lead vocals and guitar, Lars Szöke on guitar, and Tägtgren on drums & bass respectively.

First heard on the Nuclear Blast compilation Death is Just the Beginning IV compilation, the opening track, Satan's Majestic Empire unleashes Hell, going for the jugular at breakneck speed. And, although the album is frenziedly furious all the way through, its sound is well balanced due to the production skills of producer extraordinaire, Peter Tägtgren. The atmosphere is similar to that of early Marduk, while Hedlund’s vocals are cut from the same cloth as Black Metal luminaries such as Mayhem. While Lars Szöke performs guitar on the album, he also performs lead vocals on the opening track, and Feasting the Remains of Heaven. The bass guitar is more up-front in the mix, whereas with many Black Metal albums, the bass is usually lost amidst the maelstrom. The album also features fast paced tremolo picking typical of the Black Metal genre. The overall feel of the album is hostile and malicious, with an undying irreverence for all that is “Holy”!

Highly recommended for… well, I just highly recommend you listen to this f*cking album! - E.N. Wells
