FROM THE CRYPTS - CELEBRATING PAST ALBUM RELEASES in the HISTORY of HARD ROCK & HEAVY METAL…
On November 17, 2014, Dutch Death-Thrash Metal icons Thanatos released their sixth full-length studio album Global Purification via Century Media Records.
The album was mixed and mastered by the legendary Dan Swanö (Asphyx, Bloodbath, Edge Of Sanity).
(Digipak Cover)
30 years in and the band, featuring Stephan Gebédi (Vocals, Guitars), Paul Baayens (Guitars), Marco de Bruin (Bass), Yuri Rinkel (Drums) sound as ferocious as ever.
Background:
While Thanatos were in the studio recording Global Purification, Stephan Gebédi was interviewed by Frank Rini for Teeth of the Divine, and this is what he had to say about the (then) upcoming album;
“When we started writing material we said we wanted to make a record that was just as intense as stuff like Darkness Descends (Dark Angel) or Seven Churches (Possessed). Obviously we did not want to copy any of those albums but we wanted to make some very intense songs so there will be quite a bit of fast stuff on this album. Basically we are trying to make a worthy follow up to Justified Genocide (2009) which is a pretty tough album to follow anyway. But hopefully the music will speak for itself once the album is released this fall.”
And speak for itself it does, as Global Purification presents 10 tracks of brutality and savagery, featuring Thanatos’ trademarked Thrash-laden style of Death Metal. This is classic Death Metal at its apex, from Stephan’s furious Death snarl, to the multifarious battering of drums, and an over-abundance of fretboard burning riffs, these Dutch Extreme Metallers utilize their 30 years of experience to bring you masterfully crafted Death-Thrash Metal.
Critical Reception:
In a review for teethofthedivine.com, Frank Rini wrote;
“Thanatos formed in 1984, under the watchful eye of a youthful Stephan Gebédi, in the Netherlands. So essentially one could make the argument that he is responsible for starting the Death-Thrash movement in that part of the world.
Global Purification is the sixth LP from Thanatos and it’s punishing. Album opens with the title track that Deathly Thrashes along until Yuri rips into a punishing blast beat later on in the song. Stephan’s vocals have that killer deathly snarl to them and he sounds incredibly pissed off on this release, which only enhances his vocal performance. The guitars are razor sharp on this album too. Queen of Gore is a personal favorite of mine, with an outstanding rhythm section and a super brutal blasting section on this track.
World Jihad is also another highlight. Devoid of any blasts, the tune rips from start to finish with its upbeat Death-Thrash pace throughout the track. I picked up the limited edition version, of the cd, which contains the extra song, Dawn of the Dead, a new and improved version, which originally appeared on their debut 1990 album, Emerging from the Netherworlds. This retake on the original classic song is vicious. The mix from Dan Swanö is great. The guitars really breathe on this release and the drums sound fantastic, I just love the snare sound, especially during the blast beats. Stephan’s vocals are excellent too. The bass guitar sound, I felt, could have been a little more audible, that is a minor complaint.
If you have loved the past work from Thanatos then Global Purification needs to be in your collection. It’s a monstrous display of brutal Death-Thrash Metal that was one of the finest releases for 2014. Buy or your Blood will be Spilled!!”
