FROM THE CRYPTS - CELEBRATING PAST ALBUM RELEASES in the HISTORY of HARD ROCK & HEAVY METAL…
On November 14, 2014, Dutch Blackened Death/Doom-mongers Soulburn released their second full-length studio album The Suffocating Darkness via Century Media Records.
Background:
Soulburn emerged after the first demise of Dutch Death Metal legends Asphyx in the mid 90’s, when founding members Eric Daniels (guitars) and Bob Bagchus (drums) looked for a seperate outlet to unleash their mutual obsession with Bathory, Venom and Celtic Frost/Hellhammer. After a demo and the cult Feeding On Angels debut album via Century Media Records in 1998, which featured Wannes Gubbels (Pentacle) on vocals/bass, Soulburn were put to rest when Asphyx returned with On The Wings Of Inferno (2000) with the same line-up. Soulburn was dead, buried, but not forgotten…
And 16 years after their debut album, Soulburn resurfaced with their new line-up featuring the core of Eric Daniels (guitars) and Bob Bagchus (drums), teaming up with Twan van Geel (Flesh Made Sin, Legion of the Damned) as vocalist/bassist and Remco Kreft (Grand Supreme Blood Court, Nailgun Massacre, Xenomorph) as second guitarist to create The Suffocating Darkness.
Their sophomore album was recorded with Harry Wijering / Harrow Productions with mix and mastering duties taken over by Dan Swanö / Unisound Recordings. The frontcover was designed by Timo Ketola (Watain, Deathspell Omega, etc.) and additional art was provided by Roberto Toderico (Sinister, Asphyx, etc.).
To promote the release of The Suffocating Darkness, Soulburn released a video clip for the song In Suffocating Darkness. The atmospheric clip, which was directed by Twan van Geel and produced by Pim Voormeulen as well as Dennis Wassenburg / dwfoto.nl, can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/rOJwm3q5wSw
Soulburn vocalist/bassist Twan van Geel commented on the video, stating:
“The year 2016 has just emerged from its slumbering decay as we already provide you with our official video for In Suffocating Darkness. We hope you’ll enjoy our foul taste of obscured dark art as much as we do! And last but ‘satanically’ not least: The tarot cards on the table show your future, live up to it and indulge, into oblivion!”
Critical Reception:
In a review for Metal Hammer, Kai Krings wrote;
“The name Soulburn became known through the 1998 album Feeding on Angels, which combined the Dutch death lead style of Asphyx with Scandinavian darkness and cold. Now drummer Bob Bagchus - already legendary through Asphyx - has reformed the band and is satisfying the hunger for a follow-up album.
None other than Eric Daniels (ex-Asphyx, Grand Supreme Blood Court), Twan Van Geel (Legion Of The Damned, Bunkur, Flesh Made Sin) and Remco Kreft (Grand Supreme Blood Court, Nailgun Massacre) have teamed up with him and deliver with The Suffocating Darkness a chunk of hate that picks up exactly where Feeding on Angels left off. The pure evil jumps right in the face with ultra-primitive riffs, pounding, Bagchus-typical drumming and wonderfully disgusting vocals: Dark Doom-Death, which mixes Asphyx with Bathory, Hellhammer and Venom.
Admittedly, you have to be able to get involved with the sound and songwriting - if you manage to do this, the album will definitely be a constant hit on the turntable. Minimum reef density meets maximum atmosphere!”
