Sodom — Tapping the Vein

August 1, 1992 — Sodom released their fifth full-length studio album, Tapping the Vein via Drakar /SPV/ Century Media Records in the US and Steamhammer / SPV in Europe. (Apple Music or Spotify)

Background:

During the South American tour for Better Off Dead, guitarist Michael Hoffmann decided to stay in Brazil and was therefore forced to quit.

Andy Brings replaced him, and Sodom returned to the studio with producer Harris Johns to record their fifth full-length studio album, Tapping the Vein.

On this album, the band showcases more of a Death Metal influence compared to their previous releases.

The adoption of heavier, down-tuned guitars, faster paced double kick-drums, and a more gravelly vocal delivery from Tom Angelripper was evident from the start of the albums opening track Body Parts.

Other noticeable features were the groove-laden elements on songs like the albums third track, One Step Over the Line (Watch video), along with the bands use of horror-based lyrics, which were more typical of Death Metal.

Tapping the Vein is also the last album to feature original member Christian "Witchhunter" Dudek on drums; he was kicked out of the band, with Atomic Steif formerly of both Holy Moses and Living Death becoming his replacement behind the drum kit.

The album peaked at No. 56 on the GfK Entertainment Top 100 chart in Germany.

Personal Note:

While Tapping the Vein received negative reactions from music critics, I was and am still a big fan of this release. It actually stands as my favorite release from Sodom to this very day. — E.N. Wells
