SEVEN DAYS OF BEREAVEMENT: A MY DYING BRIDE RETROSPECTIVE, PART TWO.

Updated: Jun 7, 2023

Following the release of “Towards the Sinister”, My Dying Bride then released their first single, "God Is Alone", on the small French label Listenable.

The bands lineup at the time also consisted of Andrew Craighan (Guitars, Keyboards), Aaron Stainthorpe (Vocals), Rick Miah (Drums) & Calvin Robertshaw (Guitars).

The single was recorded and mixed at Revolver studio on 11th may 1991, and was produced by Tim Walker with My Dying Bride.

Overview:

The "God is Alone" single was released on 7" vinyl through France-based independent label Listenable Records in May 1991, and was limited to 1,000 handnumbered copies.

And, to the best of my knowledge, "God is Alone" still has not seen a re-release and remains one of the most sought after releases in My Dying Bride’s catalog. On the merits of the single (after it had sold out almost immediately) the band were contacted by Peaceville Records who offered to sign them to a record deal. The band agreed to sign with the label and all of My Dying Bride’s albums thereafter have been released by Peaceville Records.

The single features two tracks, "God is Alone" and "De Sade Soliloquay". Both songs would later be featured in re-recorded versions on the B-side of the "Symphonaire Infernus Et Spera Empyrium” EP (1992) EP. Both tracks are moderately tempered Death-Doom Metal, which once again features vocalist Aaron Stainthorpe’s signature Death growl with a couple added twists. And, like their “Towards the Sinister” demo, this single is another prime example of the greatness to come. — E.N. Wells
