30 years ago today, the Madman released his live album, “Live & Loud”!
On this day (June 28) in 1993, Ozzy Osbourne released his third (counting Tribute) live album, “Live & Loud” via Epic Records.
At the time, it was to be Osbourne's final album following Osbourne's final tour before retiring, aptly titled "No More Tours". The track "Black Sabbath" featured the original line-up of Black Sabbath, the members of which were invited to join Ozzy as guest stars for the Costa Mesa Reunion shows.
No More Tours:
As previously stated, this tour was to be Ozzy Osbourne's last tour to spend time with his family, because he was incorrectly diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Following the tour, Osbourne changed his mind and decided to keep touring.
The opening acts were a combo of Slaughter, Ugly Kid Joe, Faster Pussycat and Motörhead before Alice in Chains took over in the fall. After touring together, Osbourne's bassist Mike Inez joined Alice in Chains on their “Dirt” tour and became a permanent member of the band.
For the last two shows on November 14-15, 1992 in Costa Mesa, the opening acts were Sepultura, and Black Sabbath. According to Tony Iommi, Dio quit because he was asked to support Ozzy Osbourne's final shows at Costa Mesa, referring to Ozzy as a "clown." For the two Costa Mesa shows, the band replaced Dio with Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford; on the second night, Iommi, Geezer Butler and original Sabbath drummer Bill Ward joined Osbourne onstage for four songs. Halford and Dio were friends (Dio having been impressed with Halford's work ethic on the 'Stars' project) and Halford would only do the Costa Mesa shows with Dio's blessing, which he received when he spoke with Dio by phone. Both shows were unofficially recorded in their entirety and are now widely circulated as audio and video bootlegs.
Ozzy’s Touring Musicians:
• Zakk Wylde – Guitar
• Mike Inez – Bass
• Randy Castillo – Drums
• John Sinclair – Keyboards
Content & Release Information:
In addition to the standard release in a 'fat-boy' 2CD case, the album was released as a digipak with a metal 'speaker grille' cover and included tattoos, as well as the booklet; the official release was preceded by a single CD sampler issued as a promotional item. A DVD of “Live & Loud” was also issued, one of the very first music compilations released in that format. The DVD is a compilation of live footage from several shows rather than a single concert: this is evident as Osbourne can be seen both shirtless and wearing different clothes during the same song, while guitarist Zakk Wylde can be seen playing up to three different guitars in the same song. The live recordings in the CD (with the exclusion of Wylde's guitar solo and Castillo's drum solo) are used as the soundtrack for the collage of performances in the video release, the only difference being in the selection of speeches with which Osbourne introduces some of the songs.
The album, along with “The Ultimate Sin” and “Just Say Ozzy”, has since been deleted from Ozzy's catalog and was not remastered and reissued along with the rest of Ozzy's albums in 2002. Despite this, the live track "I Don't Want to Change the World" appeared on “The Ozzman Cometh” and “The Essential Ozzy Osbourne” compilations.
In 1994, Osbourne won a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance for the live version of "I Don't Want to Change the World", which is included in this album.
