19 years ago this week, Neurosis entered the eye of the storm!
On June 28, 2004, Neurosis released their eighth full-length studio album “The Eye of Every Storm” via Neurot/Relapse Records. It retains the strong folk music influences prominent on the band's previous album “A Sun That Never Sets”.
Background:
Beginning with “A Sun That Never Sets”, Neurosis began incorporating clean vocals and acoustic instrumentation with a growing folk music influence, more noted presence of classical string instruments (which had been used sparsely since “Souls At Zero”) as well as slower tempos and a more contemplative sound. Allmusic described this change as an "aesthetic sea change". 2004's “The Eye of Every Storm” expanded upon this change by incorporating more ambient textures into the mix, while exploring their trudging and massive sound with a more dynamic approach closer to Post-Rock than their earlier work.
Critical Reception:
On August 4, 2004, Adrien Begrand at PopMatters wrote;
“The Eye of Every Storm” is brilliantly paced, as the instrumental “Shelter” provides a brief respite from all the lengthier songs, and the elegiac “I Can See You” brings things to a solemn conclusion. The band’s metamorphosis into a more subdued band may have taken a few attempts, but Neurosis and Steve Albini have finally pulled it off, with surprisingly superb results. This album’s breadth will test the patience of many people, but for those who like Tool’s great “Lateralus”, the murky, doom jazz of BOHREN & DER CLUB OF GORE/, or Anathema’s recent “A Natural Disaster”, “The Eye of Every Storm” is worthy of their attention. 2004 has been a very good year for Metal in general, and this one ranks near the top of the heap.”
While in a retrospective review for sleepingvillagereviews.com on June 25, 2020, Forest Bohrer of the band Adzes stated;
“The marketing at the time rather curiously focused on a softer, gentler Neurosis, but this record is no less heavy than the rest of Neurosis’ discography. It is a masterpiece of songwriting and experimentation, and a record that explores a range of emotions and musical ideas. In an oeuvre as exceptional as Neurosis’, this is the one album I return to most often, and the one that draws me in most powerfully.”
