19 years ago this week, Neurosis entered the eye of the storm!

On June 28, 2004, Neurosis released their eighth full-length studio album โ€œThe Eye of Every Stormโ€ via Neurot/Relapse Records. It retains the strong folk music influences prominent on the band's previous album โ€œA Sun That Never Setsโ€.

Background:

Beginning with โ€œA Sun That Never Setsโ€, Neurosis began incorporating clean vocals and acoustic instrumentation with a growing folk music influence, more noted presence of classical string instruments (which had been used sparsely since โ€œSouls At Zeroโ€) as well as slower tempos and a more contemplative sound. Allmusic described this change as an "aesthetic sea change". 2004's โ€œThe Eye of Every Stormโ€ expanded upon this change by incorporating more ambient textures into the mix, while exploring their trudging and massive sound with a more dynamic approach closer to Post-Rock than their earlier work.

Critical Reception:

On August 4, 2004, Adrien Begrand at PopMatters wrote;

โ€œThe Eye of Every Stormโ€ is brilliantly paced, as the instrumental โ€œShelterโ€ provides a brief respite from all the lengthier songs, and the elegiac โ€œI Can See Youโ€ brings things to a solemn conclusion. The bandโ€™s metamorphosis into a more subdued band may have taken a few attempts, but Neurosis and Steve Albini have finally pulled it off, with surprisingly superb results. This albumโ€™s breadth will test the patience of many people, but for those who like Toolโ€™s great โ€œLateralusโ€, the murky, doom jazz of BOHREN & DER CLUB OF GORE/, or Anathemaโ€™s recent โ€œA Natural Disasterโ€, โ€œThe Eye of Every Stormโ€ is worthy of their attention. 2004 has been a very good year for Metal in general, and this one ranks near the top of the heap.โ€

While in a retrospective review for sleepingvillagereviews.com on June 25, 2020, Forest Bohrer of the band Adzes stated;

โ€œThe marketing at the time rather curiously focused on a softer, gentler Neurosis, but this record is no less heavy than the rest of Neurosisโ€™ discography. It is a masterpiece of songwriting and experimentation, and a record that explores a range of emotions and musical ideas. In an oeuvre as exceptional as Neurosisโ€™, this is the one album I return to most often, and the one that draws me in most powerfully.โ€
