24 years ago today, the masters of Gore Metal unleashed “Chainsaw Dismemberment”!
On this day (July 6) in 1999, Mortician released their second full-length studio album “Chainsaw Dismemberment” in Europe via Relapse Records (released in the U.S. on October 28, 1999 via Relapse Records).
Background:
Influenced by such seminal Death Metal and Grindcore legends as Repulsion, Impetigo, Autopsy, Incantation, Pungent Stench, Napalm Death and Carcass, Mortician’s music is also heavily inspired by their love of horror movies and slasher films, which can be witnessed throughout the bands lyrics, artwork, and the use of slasher film samples within their discography. And one such nightmarish release is the bands 1999 Relapse release, “Chainsaw Dismemberment”.
The album includes such tracks as Wolfen, obviously based on the 1981 American horror film directed by Michael Wadleigh (based on Whitley Strieber's 1978 novel The Wolfen). The films storyline follows a city cop who has been assigned to uncover what is behind a series of vicious murders. Originally, it is believed the murders are animal attacks until the cop discovers an indigenous legend about wolf spirits. (On a personal note; Wolfen was one of my favorite films when I was a wee lad, and I highly recommend watching it if you are a lover of early 80’s supernatural movies).
Then we have the track Slaughterhouse, which I would assume is based on the cult classic Slaughterhouse, which is a 1987 American black comedy horror slasher film directed by Rick Roessler and starring Joe B. Barton. The films plot tells the story of an old nut-case farmer named Lester Bacon who lives with his simple-minded, obese son Buddy. Both of them lament the fate of the old skilled hog farmer, now giving way to modern factory-type slaughterhouses. The father and son go on a killing spree against people who trespass on their property. In the opening scene, Buddy kills two teenagers, Kevin and Michelle, who are having some time alone in their car on a remote area of Lovers Lane.
Then we have songs like “Camp Blood”, which can be easily be seen as an ode to none other than Friday the 13th’s Jason Vorhees.
The track “The Crazies” has to be an homage to the 1973 film by George A. Romero. The Crazies (also known as Code Name: Trixie) is an American science fiction horror film written and directed by George A. Romero about the residents of a small American town that accidentally become afflicted by a military biological weapon. The military attempts to contain the manmade combat virus that causes death and permanent insanity in those infected.
I think you get the sense of what Mortician are all about. The bands use sick, twisted and gory lyrics, chock-full of black comedy (dark humor), brutal riffs and Death growls, “Chainsaw Dismemberment” is perfect for all of you demented fans of the deeply disturbing and insanely grotesque. — E.N. Wells
Other key tracks are; “Stab”, “Rabid”, “Bloodshed”, “Island of the Death”, “Funeral Feast”, “Barbarian”, and “Lord of the Dead (Mortician Part II)”.
