On November 29, 1993, Kataklysm released their EP The Mystical Gate of Reincarnation which contains the The Death Gate Cycle of Reincarnation demo and the bonus track The Orb of Uncreation.
Background:
In 1992, Kataklysm released their debut demo The Death Gate Cycle of Reincarnation, which gained significant praise from the underground Metal scene. Nuclear Blast Records soon took notice of the band following its release. In 1994, Kataklysm signed to Nuclear Blast, with the band releasing their first EP The Mystical Gate of Reincarnation.
Supporting Tour:
Kataklysm played a small run of dates in late 1993 to early 1994 through Canada to support the album. This included a show at Backstreet in Montreal, QC, Canada with Broken Hope on December 16, 1993, and a show at Les Foufounes Électriques, Montreal, QC, Canada on February 25, 1994 opening for Entombed on their Misanthropic in Canada Tour 1994.
They later toured the North America where they played a show with Cannibal Corpse, Cynic and Sinister at Le Spectrum in Montreal, QC, Canada on May 28, 1994 before a run of dates in Mexico. Kataklysm then returned to North America where they played a show at L'Importateur in Quebec City, QC, Canada with Dead Horse on August 10, 1994.
Critical Reception:
“The paradox of Kataklysm is their strength of innovation; bold and powerful it exists in their creation of complex and aggressive songs from nothing, but shy and callow it is missing in some of the obvious harmonic progressions or meaningless dynamic note allocation that occurs; in other words, this music bows out of some of what it could use to make itself great, and consequently is somewhat cheesy and often resembles rock music through its similarity. These degradations however do nothing at all to diminish the sheer spirited enjoyment of this album for its maintenance of complexity within an acclaimedly brutal tempo, and only highlight how powerful the essence of this death metal hybrid can be.” — Death Metal Underground (deathmetal.org)
