In the Woods… - Cease the Day (2018)

FROM THE CRYPTS - CELEBRATING PAST ALBUM RELEASES in the HISTORY of HARD ROCK & HEAVY METAL…

On November 23, 2018, Norway’s In the Woods… released their fifth full-length studio album Cease the Day via Debemur Morti Productions.

Recorded in Kristiansand, Norway and Brighton, England Sept 2017 - May 2018, the album was mixed and mastered at Studio Henosis, France by Frédéric Gervais. The albums artwork and layout were created by Dr. Winter / Teratogen.

Background:

Hot off the heels of their mind blowing 2016 opus Pure, Norway’s In the Woods… returned in 2018 with their latest genre-destroying masterpiece, Cease the Day.

Continuing to refine and perfect their sound while ever expanding it in new directions, Cease the Day is a powerful and kaleidoscopic effort. A thunderous undercurrent of melodic riffing drives these songs forward, elements of Doom, Death, and Progressive Black Metal all coming together to form a cohesive whole.

Chilling ambience, psychedelia, avant-garde, and deep soaring vocals ebb and flow to craft a unique sound that truly must be heard to be believed, all before crushing the listener with the band’s most extreme moments since their debut Heart of the Ages.

With Cease the Day, In the Woods… continue to prove themselves as masters of whatever craft they choose to pursue.

New ventures await

Below are excerpts from an interview featuring Into the Woods… drummer Anders Kobro:

James and Bernt put together the guitar riffs over about four months in 2017, and the recording was completed over about four months after that. We have all been working with recording music for many years and were eager to get In the Woods… restarted after a difficult period. Hopefully we will be starting work on writing the next album in early 2019.” — Anders Kobro discussing their Cease the Day with Decibel Magazine.

“… people who want things to always be the same and are afraid of change. You can’t expect all fans of dark, melancholic to be positive.”Anders Kobro discussing their Cease the Day with Decibel Magazine.

“It’s been entirely a case of him (James Fogarty) filling in what others weren’t there to do. Initially it was to contribute keys, but then Jan wasn’t interested to reform with In the Woods…, so he ended up doing vocals as well. When he was in Norway recording vocals, we also asked him to contribute guitars because Oddvar was no longer with us (RIP). It is also the first record with Bernt Sorensen—he recorded all the rhythm guitars on the album and James recorded the guitar melodies and bass, because he didn’t want it to be so similar to the guitars in Ewigkeit.”Anders Kobro discussing James Fogarty and his role in the band (as guitarist/vocalist) with Decibel Magazine.

“The modern world is deceptively crowded; you can spend all day chatting with your friends in different countries online, and not say a single word to those sitting right next to you. We’re living in very interesting times and human nature is finding it hard to adapt to the rapid speed of our own technological progress, leading us down a strange road to who knows where. The genie is out of the bottle…”Anders Kobro to Decibel Magazine.

Critical Reception:

In his review for Angry Metal Guy, Mark Z. wrote;

For now, Cease stands as a wholly enjoyable Progressive Black Metal album that’s sure to please fans of Borknagar or Enslaved, not to mention those who heard Pure and knew the band could do better. They can, and Cease the Day is proof of it.”
