August 16, 1986 — Détente released their debut studio album, Recognize No Authority via Roadrunner Records and was licensed to Metal Blade Records. (Listen)
The album was dedicated to the memory of Harry Fox.
Background:
The lyrics on Recognize No Authority are politically driven, more resembling those of bands like the Dead Kennedy’s. But, the furious riffing, epic guitar solos, and then-standard reverb drenched production on Détente’s debut release make it an undoubtable mid 80's Thrash Metal classic.
Détente are also notable for being one of two Thrash bands featuring a female lead vocalists, Holy Moses being the other. Vocalist Dawn Crosby’s aggressive voice was as powerful as many of the days male vocalists, no matter what naysayers might have you believe.
Within days of the debut album's release, the supporting tour had to be canceled when drummer and co-founder Dennis was severely burned in an industrial accident, resulting in more than three months of hospitalization. Despite the lack of touring the debut sold strongly in Europe, especially in Germany and the Netherlands.
Unfortunately, shortly after the release of this album, the band disbanded, allegedly due to problems deriving from Dawn Crosby's alcoholism and supposed difficult personality.
Post-breakup:
Dawn Crosby continued with the Détente brand. Due to a legal dispute, the name Détente had to be dropped and was changed to Fear of God, who were eventually signed to Warner Bros. Records.
In 1987, bassist Steve Hochheiser and lead guitarist Ross Robinson formed the short-lived Thrash Metal band Catalepsy (not to be confused with the Deathcore band Catalepsy) with the Canadian vocalist Veronica Ross, and Sacred Reich + Machine Head drummer Dave McLain.
Ross Robinson would later achieve fame in the mid 90s as the producer of career defining albums for bands such as Korn, Sepultura, Fear Factory, Machine Head and Soulfly, establishing himself as one of the main architects of the late 90s Nu-Metal sound.
Sadly, Dawn Crosby died in 1996 of liver failure associated with her history of alcohol and drug abuse.
Reunion:
The group reunited in 2008 for a series of appearances with singer Ann Boleyn of Hellion filling in for Crosby. In July, they performed at the Headbanger's Open Air Festival in Germany.
As of November, 2009, Boleyn was replaced with Tiina Teal.
Reissue:
In 2007 Recognize No Authority was re-released on Steve Hochheiser's own label Cognitive Records, and with new fans discovering Détente has since been repackaged into multiple editions.
