Dismember - Indecent & Obscene (1993)

𝐅𝐑𝐎𝐌 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐂𝐑𝐘𝐏𝐓𝐒 - 𝐂𝐄𝐋𝐄𝐁𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐏𝐀𝐒𝐓 𝐀𝐋𝐁𝐔𝐌 𝐑𝐄𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐒𝐄𝐒 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐘 𝐨𝐟 𝐇𝐀𝐑𝐃 𝐑𝐎𝐂𝐊 & 𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐕𝐘 𝐌𝐄𝐓𝐀𝐋…

On December 7, 1993, nearly six months from it’s European release on June 24, 1993 via Nuclear Blast, Dismember's second full-length studio album, Indecent & Obscene was finally released in North America via Nuclear Blast America/RED Distribution.

Background:

Dismember came up with the name for this album after a British newspaper referred to the band as Indecent and Obscene. The idea for the cover design came after seeing a poster of Jim Morrison of The Doors An American Poet poster.

The album is accompanied by two music videos for the tracks "Skinfather" and "Dreaming in Red", the latter of which was aired on MTV's HeadBangers Ball.

Overview:

Indecent & Obscene is nothing short of a Swedish Death Metal classic, combining their uncompromising brutality with melody and Thrashing fury. Vocalist, Matti utilizes harder edged D-beat vocal stylings and periodic screams throughout the album, and to great effect.

While guitarists Robert Senneback and David Blomqvist shred through flesh with their buzzsaw riffing and quick, but sharp speed licks, Richard Cabeza’s bass thunders through each track, mixing well with the churning of the guitars, resulting in an even deadlier bone-crushing barrage.

Drummer Fred Estby is a cannonade of mass-destruction, spitting out rapid fire fills and locomotive-like double bass, beating you until you’re bloodied and senseless...

In conclusion; the whole album is 40 +

minutes of aural assault from start to finish, beating you into sensory overload. — E.N. Wells

Dismembering North America & European Tour:

Dismember embarked on their Dismembering North America Tour with headliners Vader (who were on their The Ultimate Incantation Tour), along with supporting act Suffocation (who were touring in support of Breeding the Spawn). The tour began on May 5, 1993 at the Ritz Theatre in Tampa, Florida, with its final date on July 3, 1993 at Arena López Mateos in Tlanepantla, Mexico.

In early September 1993, Dismember began a run of dates in Germany with then-label mates Benediction. According to an interview with Benediction in metallian.com, Dismember and said band got into a business dispute and eventually a fisticuff at this stage over tour arrangements and monies owed. Although, I am not positive about the outcome, I do believe Dismember did not complete this run of dates as all dates I've seen have the band Atheist listed as one of the opening acts. As you can see below, flyers and tickets were printed with Dismember as one of the bands in the lineup.

On September 10, 1993, Dismember began a leg of European dates at the Paradiso in Amsterdam with headliners Morbid Angel and fellow Swedish Death Metallers Grave. The last show of the tour was at the Marquee Club in London, England on October 3, 1993.

Noteworthy:

Indecent & Obscene is their best-selling album to this day.

Critical Reception:

In a review at metalcrypt.com by Christopher Foley stated;

Indecent & Obscene packs a lot of punch, with the first three tracks being a tour-de-force in Swedish Death Metal. Special mention has to go to Dreaming in Red, the opening to this track is actually beautiful and is a great way to introduce the end of the album, after around a minute and a half or so of melodic guitar work they kick back into gear and do what they do best. The whole album is bloody great though. Definitely up there with my favorite Death Metal albums, any fan of the genre would be a moron to be without this. Highly recommended!”

My Two Cents:

One thing that I found irregular, is that an album this high in caliber hasn’t been talked about much in the zines as of late! No salutes, no nods, nothing, just silence! Many bands today oh a debt of gratitude to Dismember for helping to pave the way for Extreme Metal with this release as well as with their debut! - E.N. Wells
