41 years ago this month, the iconic NWOBHM band, Demon gave us the first taste of their Prog. Metal leanings!
On July 3, 1982, NWOBHM band Demon released their second full-length studio album, “The Unexpected Guest” via Carrere Records.
Background:
Demon's second album “The Unexpected Guest” was recorded in 1982 at Bray Studios, famous for the Hammer Horror Films. Even today, “The Unexpected Guest” is talked about and revered within the Metal community, with many citing it as one of the most powerful and finest examples of the NWOBHM movement.
Certainly, it showcased the band's distinctive Classic Rock musical style and the thoughtful, imaginative lyrics of Dave Hill and Mal Spooner. The addition of Andy Richards on keyboards gave yet more depth to the already expansive Demon sound. Furthermore, this second album offering was more complete, flowing easily from beginning to end.
The Wells Perspective:
The musical growth of Demon makes for an interesting conversation. The bands first album, “Night of the Demon”, was a blend of different styles of Hard Rock and Metal. Their third album, “The Plague”, teetered on the edge of Progressive Rock/Metal. And, stuck in the middle, we have “The Unexpected Guest”, which already had given us a small taste of the bands later Prog. Rock/Metal leanings. In turn, “The Unexpected Guest” showcased Dave Hill and Mal Spooner as the impressive songsmiths that they were, and the greatness that was to be expected with their follow-up, “The Plague”. — E.N.
