FROM THE CRYPTS - CELEBRATING PAST ALBUM RELEASES in the HISTORY of HARD ROCK & HEAVY METAL…
On November 25, 2013, Deicide released their eleventh full-length studio album In the Minds of Evil via Century Media Records.
It was the first album to feature guitarist Kevin Quirion and the last to feature guitarist Jack Owen. The album has been described as moving away from the melodic inclinations of the previous few albums and towards an "old school" Death Metal sound reminiscent of Legion.
Background:
Drummer Steve Asheim observed that the album was "a departure from our recent stuff and has more of an old school vibe. Not quite as melodic and very catchy riffs". Asheim elaborated further, explaining that the band wanted Glen Benton's vocals "to sound more old-school. So, it's a bit of the new with a little throwback action". Benton concurred, observing that Deicide has "settled into a permanent lineup and the writing process now is like the writing process was back in the beginning and we’re all showing up and writing the songs together. Everybody has an input and it shows". Benton cited the addition of guitarist Kevin Quirion as critical to In the Minds of Evil.
Drummer Steve Asheim also noted that producer Jason Suecof "wanted to capture the Legion feel" on In the Minds of Evil. During the tracking of the album, Asheim revealed that he was performing with "a blown out shoulder. It hurt like hell. It kept dislocating, it was popping and cracking. I just dealt with the pain and got the job done though". Asheim further noted that his approach to drumming on the album was "mostly improvised". He explained in another interview that the composition of the album reflected both preparation and improvisation.
"Some vocals and guitar and bass stuff (were improvised). The song writing – the parts and structures – were all done pre-pro[duction], before we got there. But once we were in and mic'd up, there was a lot of on-the-spot stuff happening. Most of my drum fills were improv. And I know the fellas just let loose with some on-the-fly kind of stuff together, and you can really hear that. I think the spontaneity and the energy, it really rings through". – Steve Asheim
The No Salvation Tour 2013:
Metal icons Deicide returned to the road in the fall of 2013 on their No Salvation Tour – a headlining run with fellow Century Media labelmates and death metal favorites Broken Hope. Also in support were Disgorge and Necronomicon.
The tour launched on October 2, 2013 in Atlanta, GA, and ended October 24 in Austin, TX. Highlights included a convergence with the Delaware Death Fest October 5, as well as stops in New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles. Deicide were then touring to promote their then-upcoming, yet-to-be-titled studio release, due out the following month via Century Media Records.
The In the Minds of Evil Tour 2014:
Almost one year later, beginning October 8, 2014, Deicide finally hit the road again in support of In The Minds Of Evil" for its first North American tour in support of the release. This time around they were joined by special guests Septic Flesh, Inquisition, Abysmal Dawn and Carach Angren.
Critical Reception:
In his review, Loudwire's Joe Di Vita noted;
“While In the Minds of Evil does bring Deicide's sound back a bit to the Hoffman era, it doesn't have the feral ferocity that the band was so lauded for, even compared to their weaker albums like In Torment in Hell and Insineratehymn. The album is in no way a bad listen, it just might feel like by the time you reach the end of the album the first time, you've already heard it twice. Regardless, there are still cuts like Beyond Salvation and Trample the Cross that stand out as some of the best since The Stench of Redemption and others that will certainly bring more energy live and see the songs unleashed at their true potential.
