Deeds of Flesh - Of What’s to Come (2008)

FROM THE CRYPTS - CELEBRATING PAST ALBUM RELEASES in the HISTORY of HARD ROCK & HEAVY METAL…

On November 18, 2008, Deeds of Flesh released their seventh full-length studio Of What's To Come via their own label, Unique Leader Records. The last song is a re-recording from their second album, Inbreeding the Anthropophagi.

Background:

Shortly after the release of Crown of Souls, Deeds of Flesh added guitarist Sean Southern to their line-up. In 2007, Jacoby Kingston, founding member and bassist/vocalist, announced his departure from the band and was replaced by Tech-Death bassist Erlend Caspersen (Spawn of Possession).

In 2008, the forefathers of Technical Extremity returned after 2 years following the success of their previous release Crown Of Souls. A pivotal release in many ways, their then-latest effort Of What's To Come is nothing short of a masterpiece, combining the classic Deeds Of Flesh sound with many added new elements, blistering drums, powerful vocals and mind blowing bass lines. The album is also chocked full of twisted, memorable guitar riffs, and… the major head-turner… for the first time ever the band utilizes guitar solos, (due to the addition of guitarist Sean Southern).

Speaking of Sean Southern, not only is Of What's To Come the first studio release since he came aboard, it is the first to feature Erlend Caspersen on bass. The album is also the first new studio album to be released on the bands own Unique Leader label.

Now to focus on the most significant aspect of Of What's To Come. Whereas the lyrical themes on previous albums had been more focused on violent and gore-based stories, this album showcases a change in direction (a first since their inception) to science fiction, with each song (save for the final track), detailing an extremely complex story about Mankind's interactions with an Ancient space-race which wishes to harvest life (or Virvum). The story was continued on the band's following album, Portals to Canaan, which was released in 2013.

The Tragic Loss of Erik Lindmark:

Following a battle with sclerosis, a disease that causes the abnormal hardening of body tissues, Unique Leader Records founder and Deeds of Flesh guitarist and co-founder Erik Lindmark died on November 29, 2018 at age 46. The label released a statement addressing the situation, paying tribute to the late death-metal CEO's legacy by saying, "The indelible mark he has left on the Death Metal genre is monumental, both as a business man and as a musician. After building this label from scratch with his Deeds bandmates, Erik took Unique Leader to a level he had never expected it, or the genre, to get to."

Lindmark is survived by his wife and their eight-year-old daughter Bella. A GoFundMe was set up at the time for his daughter to help with future expenses.

Lindmark left "explicit instructions" while in the hospital that the label should go on without him, so the surviving staff (then) planned to take through January (2019) to reconfigure positions in order to carry on their leader's wishes. Several popular Technical and Brutal Death Metal bands released albums on Unique Leader, including Decrepit Birth, Psycroptic, Soreption, and Fallujah, the last of which (at the time) released their own statement.

Their statement on Facebook read, "He took a chance on Fallujah when we were still in school working on what would become The Harvest Wombs. We, and the west coast Death Metal scene along with a lot of other bands you all know and love owe a lot of their early careers to Erik and Unique Leader. Our condolences to his family and friends.”

"My heart is heavy after hearing and trying to digest this news. Erik Lindmark has passed away," wrote Suicide Silence bassist Dan Kenny on Instagram. "A lot of people who know me, know how much Deeds of Flesh & Unique Leader means to me. He was a fucking legend for both."

R.I.P. Erik Lindmark (June 9, 1972 - November 29, 2018)
