16 years ago this month, Darkest Hour were touring for the 15th anniversary of “Deliver Us”! The band were playing this album in its entirety! My son Zakk was at the bands show in Detroit, Michigan on July 9, 2022 (one day prior to the anniversary of the albums release) and he stated that their show was the best show he had seen to date!
On July 10th in 2007, Darkest Hour released their fifth full-length studio album, “Deliver Us” via Victory Records.
Background:
In early 2007, the band was in Vancouver to work on their next record with Devin Townsend. On March 7, 2007, Victory Records issued a press statement confirming the title of the album was “Deliver Us”.
The album debuted at No. 110 on the Billboard album charts, with sales of 6,600. The song "Sanctuary" is featured in the video game Tony Hawk Proving Ground, while their song "Demon(s)" is featured in Guitar Hero 5 and "Doomsayer" was made available in Guitar Hero Warriors of Rock through the “Darkest Hour Track Pack”, the last to be released by Activision. The artwork was created by John Baizley who has also done art for bands such as Pig Destroyer and his own band Baroness.
In April 2008, Darkest Hour created a Washington Capitals fight song and a MySpace tribute page in support of the Capitals 2008 Stanley Cup playoffs run. The song "A Thousand Words to Say but One" was re-recorded with new lyrics and new solos into "Let's Go Caps!"
“Deliver Us” was the last album to feature lead guitarist Kris Norris, as in September 2008 it was reported on Blabbermouth.net that Norris had left the band and would be pursuing producing routes and possibly a new band. Not long after Kris Norris' departure, they found replacement Mike "Lonestar" Carrigan.
The song "Demon(s)" can also be heard in the episode "Escape from Dragon House" of HBO's True Blood.
Critical Reception:
In his review for AllMusic, Thom Jurek states;
“Victory Records has spared nothing, put it all on the table for Darkest Hour's fifth full-length Deliver Us. The package is a deluxe four-color job with metallic inset print for the band's name. And there's a reason to do that for this band, because “Deliver Us” is their most realized statement yet. They are still a devoted, Thrashed-out Death Metal band whose Washington DC Hardcore roots run deep. It's more that as a band, they've matured, arrived at something completely realized after nearly a decade together.”
While Scott Alisoglu at Blabbermouth.net was a little harsher, stating;
“Chances are that if you liked "Undoing Ruin" that you will also like "Deliver Us". I don't find the band's fifth release to have the same impact as "Undoing Ruin", mainly because of the aforementioned lack of stand-out tracks, but that does not mean that it is not a strong effort in its own right. If nothing else, DARKEST HOUR is consistent.”
