Dark Tranquillity - Atoma (2016)

FROM THE CRYPTS - CELEBRATING PAST ALBUM RELEASES in the HISTORY of HARD ROCK & HEAVY METAL…

On November 4, 2016, Dark Tranquillity released their eleventh full-length studio album Atoma via Century Media Records.

Atoma is the band's first studio album with bassist Anders Iwers, who replaced founding member Martin Henriksson (also the rhythm guitarist), after Henriksson left the band in early 2016.

Background:

In March 2016, guitarist Martin Henriksson announced his departure from the band, admitting he had "lost the passion for playing music" after playing in the band for 26 years.

On May 22, 2016, Dark Tranquillity began recording their eleventh full-length album Atoma, but did not officially announce it until July 6, 2016. The album was finally released on November 4, 2016, via Century Media. Two songs, The Absolute and Time Out of Place, were recorded during the making of this album, but were released on a bonus disc in the limited edition. These songs are softer, darker and more brooding with only clean singing, reminiscent of bands such as Katatonia and the later Opeth.

In March 2017, the band released The Absolute as a digital single. Another song, Reconstruction Time Again, was released as a Japanese edition bonus track. It is a nine-minute Electro-Industrial medley of the songs State of Trust, None Becoming, and Uniformity from the Construct album.

On January 28, 2018, Dark Tranquillity embarked on a European tour with main support band Equilibrium. In September 2018, Dark Tranquillity kicked off a co-headlining tour in North America in support of Atoma with Amorphis. The tour also included Moonspell & Omnium Gatherum. I attended the Fort Wayne, Indiana show at Piere's on September 11, 2018, ultimately meeting all four bands.

Atoma is the last release to feature founding member Niklas Sundin, who would depart from the band in March 2020.

Critical Reception:

In a review for Metal Hammer, Jason Hicks writes;

“As one of the godfathers of the Gothenburg sound, you just can’t deny the impact that Dark Tranquillity had on the face of metal music when bursting onto the scene back in 1989. Some 27 years of service, 10 albums, and many imitators later, and the Swedes are still going strong as they unleash album number 11.”
