27 years ago this month, Cryptopsy gave us the most vile of offerings!
On July 3, 1996, Cryptopsy released their second full-length studio album, “None So Vile” via the now-defunct Wrong Again Records. The album was later reissued by Displeased Records and Century Media Records. It was re-released on vinyl in 2012 by War on Music via Carrere Records.
“None So Vile” is the first album to feature bassist Eric Langois, and the last to feature vocalist Lord Worm, until his return on “Once Was Not”.
Background:
In 1996, the line-up of Worm, Mounier, Levasseur, and Langlois released the album “None So Vile” on the Swedish label Wrong Again Records. By this time, Levasseur was a very prominent songwriter in the band. His guitar leads consisted of very fast yet complex shreds, which were usually played in short bursts. Although Levasseur handled all the guitar parts on the album, the band would add Miguel Roy as a second touring guitarist.
In 1997, after the tour in support of “None So Vile”, Lord Worm left the band, citing health issues. The band hired the Boston native Mike DiSalvo, vocalist of Death Metal band Infestation, (with the personal approval of Lord Worm). In July 1997, Cryptopsy's appearance at the Milwaukee Metalfest XI gained the attention of many American Metalheads, as well as that of the label Century Media.
Critical Reception:
Since its release, “None So Vile” has received universal acclaim. AllMusic gave the album four and a half stars noting its musical complexity.
Sputnikmusic gave the album a perfect five star rating stating that the album's highlight tracks are "Phobophile" and "Slit Your Guts".
In 2012, Decibel Magazine ranked the album No. 10 on their “The Top 100 Death Metal Albums of All Time”.
In 2016, Loudwire ranked the album No. 4 on their “10 Best Metal Albums of 1996”.
In his review for AllMusic, William York states;
“…listeners should be aware that this album is almost entirely relentless and not for the faint of heart. Subsequent Cryptopsy albums may be more innovative in their use of out-there time signatures and guitar harmonies, for example, but “None So Vile” achieves near perfection on its own terms, within the Death Metal genre.”
