5 years ago today, Ears were filled with “White Noise” while hearts were filled with “Black Metal”.
On this day (June 22) in 2018, Craft released their fifth full-length studio album, “White Noise and Black Metal” via Season of Mist.
In the promotion of “White Noise and Black Metal”, Season of Mist had these fine words to say;
“Craft return to strike terror once again with their long-awaited new album “White Noise and Black Metal”. Their first new album in over seven years, 'White Noise and Black Metal' sees the notorious and highly influential Swedish Black Metal band reclaiming their throne as one of the most intimidating and caustic entities in the underground. A cold and calculated attack on hope and the light, Craft spew nihilism and negativity in its purest forms. 'White Noise and Black Metal' is a true manifesto of hostility, and a testament to the genre's most elite and uncompromising band!”
To promote the album, Craft released the single “The Cosmic Sphere Falls”. Upon the release of the single, the band commented;
“We have been waiting for the right time to record and release something new. In line with the Craft tradition, we needed everything to feel right and our tracks to fully express what we want to do at this stage. We always take our time, but our work is always in our minds; Craft are not, and have never been at rest, and we intend the band to last for a lifetime. At last, we are ready and proud to release the opening track, ‘The Cosmic Sphere Falls’ from our album, “White Noise and Black Metal”. It seems perfect to us that it is the first thing, which you will hear. Our intention, both with the track as well as the album, is to revisit the primitive energy of our older records, while letting the melodies move forward from ‘Void’. In this track, traditional Black Metal melodies are disregarded and where you will recognize the old while experiencing the new. We think that no more words are needed, instead we will let the music speak for itself. Join us in the darkness of “The Cosmic Sphere Falls”!”
Overview:
Formed in 1994, Craft are one of the most prolific Black Metal bands to come out of a country more renowned for its Swedish Death Metal movement, and successfully climb out from under its shadow. In their 25 + years of existence, they have continuously proven to be one of the most sardonic and misanthropic entities in the world of Black Metal. So, it’s a wonder, how a band who’s previous releases epitomize the genres veracity, are so easily disregarded in the world of Metal. Although sonically different than its predecessors, the bands fifth mind-blowing release, “White Noise and Black Metal” finds the quartet taking up where they left off with their previous album “Void” (2011), proving once again that Craft are a force to be reckoned with, and should be ranked among the upper echelons of Black Metal. — E.N. Critical Reception:
In his review for Distorted Sound Magazine, Danny Sanderson wrote;
“White Noise and Black Metal is an excellent record that has all of the hallmarks of Craft‘s style and sound, and once again gives the listener an incredibly intense and aggressive musical experience…”
Writing for angrymetalguy.com, Dr. A.N. Grier stated;
“At the end of the day,“White Noise and Black Metal” is a very different album than Craft fans are familiar with. That said, this new disc has to be my favorite of theirs. There is a surprise around every corner and each song compliments the next. It does take a couple songs to get things rolling but once it’s set, it rolls. For diehard fans, you may need some patience with this one. For everyone else, White Noise and Black Metal needs at least a few spins to absorb. For me, this is one of my favorite black metal releases of 2018.”
