29 years ago today, we entered the “Shrine of the Master”!
On this day (July 8 ) in 1994, Brutality released their second full-length studio album, “When the Sky Turns Black” via Nuclear Blast America.
Background:
“When the Sky Turns Black” is written in the same vein as Brutality’s excellent debut “Screams of Anguish” (1991). Released the same year as Obituary’s “World Demise”, Bolt Thrower’s “…For Victory”, Incantation’s “Mortal Throne of Nazarene”, At The Gates’ “Terminal Spirit Disease” and Cannibal Corpse’s “The Bleeding”.
The extreme sound of these megalithic releases were vital to the Metal faithful as the landscape of the scene had been overshadowed by the rising Grunge and Alternative movement, and Metal was treated like a disease.
For me and a select group of friends, Brutality and the other aforementioned Death Metallers were in a sense, hero’s. Brutality’s brilliant lyrical content, intricate melodies, and “brutal” rhythms were openly embraced by many left with a gaping hole in the wake of popular Metal’s untimely demise.
