FROM THE CRYPTS - CELEBRATING PAST ALBUM RELEASES in the HISTORY of HARD ROCK & HEAVY METAL…
On November 2, 1999, Bruce Dickinson released his live album Scream for Me Brazil via Air Raid Records in the UK and Sanctuary Records in the US.
The album was recorded in São Paulo, Brazil. The actual concert set list consisted of eighteen songs, but six of them were cut out from this release. The songs in question were three Iron Maiden songs; Powerslave, 2 Minutes to Midnight and Flight of Icarus as well as three of Dickinson's own songs; Jerusalem, Taking the Queen and Tattooed Millionaire. Jerusalem from this concert was later released on The Best of Bruce Dickinson compilation album in 2001.
Background:
Bruce Dickinson's first solo release on his new own label Air Raid Records, Scream for Me Brazil, is a near 70-minute-long disc of live material. Recorded on the tour in support of his acclaimed Chemical Wedding album, it was the first solo Bruce Dickinson tour to include his old Iron Maiden bandmember Adrian Smith on guitar. Scream for Me Brazil does not contain a single selection from their former band's catalog (nor any tracks from Dickinson's solo debut, 1990's Tattooed Millionaire or the 1996 album Skunkworks). But the album features consistent, inspired performances, including the opening track, Trumpets of Jericho. Also featured is the epic Tears of the Dragon, the title track from Chemical Wedding, Killing Floor, Accident of Birth, and The Tower. Although both Dickinson and Smith returned to Maiden shortly after the tour wrapped up, Dickinson kept his solo career going simultaneously.
Note:
The first part of the concert consists entirely of the songs from the album The Chemical Wedding, and then the inevitable Tears of the Dragon begins to remake Dickinson's classics.
Critical Reception:
The album received good reviews and recorded good sales, but there was no lack of innocent criticism over the lack of some songs and the possibility of not being used to release double CDs. It is known by several live forgery laws of the time, the most available being The King in Crimson comes recorded in Paris. After the Darkside of Aquarius, there were Iron Maiden signs such as Powerslave, 2 Minutes to Midnight, Flight of Icarus, and Tattooed Millionaire.
In his review for AllMusic, Greg Prato states;
“Fans everywhere of one of metal's all-time great singers will enjoy Scream for Me Brazil.”
