31 years ago today, the β€œWisdom of Darkness” was birthed by Belial!



On this day (June 30) in 1992, Belial released their first EP β€œWisdom of Darkness” via Lethal Records.


Background:

After releasing a couple demo’s in 1991, Finland’s Belial unleashed their first official EP entitled β€œWisdom of Darkness”. The release combines the dominating brutality of Death Metal, the rawness of Grindcore, and the ominous darkness of Atmospheric Black Metal, successfully creating a hulking slab of primitive, herculean supremacy.



The foreboding, guttural Death growls, rapid blast-beat tempos and tremolo picked rhythms create an impenetrable wall of trepidation. β€œWisdom of Darkness” is one of the earliest releases to combine elements of Death Metal, Black Metal, and Grindcore. Although not a new concept, Belial’s blend of ambient keyboards, spoken word, and clean guitars were elements rarely seen (or heard of) in Extreme Metal.



In conclusion; β€œWisdom of Darkness” was released at a time when Death Metal was still in its adolescence, and the second wave of Black Metal was still in its infancy, making Belial true progenitors of what has since been dubbed as Blackened Death Metal, ultimately making them godfathers of this beloved (and sometimes hated) sub-genre! β€” E.N.
