29 years ago today, the album that was said to have saved Extreme Metal was released!

On this day (July 18) in 1994, At The Gates released their third full-length studio album (not an EP), βTerminal Spirit Diseaseβ via Peaceville Records.

It was re-released in 2001 via Peaceville Records in slipcase format and in 2004 with three bonus tracks. The band originally had wanted to record an EP of new material, but their label had insisted on a full-length album. To compromise, the band added several live tracks to pad the overall length.

A video was made for the song βTerminal Spirit Diseaseβ.
Background:
Guitarist Anders BjΓΆrler commented that he couldn't "remember much" from the recording sessions for βTerminal Spirit Diseaseβ. When compared to At the Gates' older material, BjΓΆrler felt the tracks "were simpler and more to the point". A violin and cello are featured on the song "And the World Returned", cited as an example of the group's attempt to explore "ideas which were a little different".
At the Gates have been deemed βthe band that saved Extreme Metal in the 90βsβ. In an interview with Vice, Tomas Lindberg was asked how he felt about the band being labeled as such. This is what he had to say;
βYeah, if you βre the kind of person or band that thinks of yourself in third person, that might be a problem. If youβre more humble and know who you are, I donβt think itβs such a big problem. I still see myself more as a music fan than a musician, really. I think I have a pretty big clue of our position in the extreme music scene, but thereβs so many other bands that I feel deserve that kind of accolade more than us. Iβm just happy that we get to play still, and that thereβs still interest, and that we can be ourselves and write the music that we want to do without having to cater to some record company. Weβre very fortunate in that position, and in that way, itβs stood with that reputation. But you have to not let it get to your head.β

Critical Reception:
Reviews for βTerminal Spirit Diseaseβ have been mostly positive. AllMusic's Eduardo Rivadavia awards the album four out of five stars, and claims that, with this album, "At the Gates raised their creative stakes beyond most everyone's original expectations, and proved that what had once been a pretty standard and uninventive death metal combo was slowly becoming a true contender in the scene."
