29 years ago today, the album that was said to have saved Extreme Metal was released!

On this day (July 18) in 1994, At The Gates released their third full-length studio album (not an EP), β€œTerminal Spirit Disease” via Peaceville Records.

It was re-released in 2001 via Peaceville Records in slipcase format and in 2004 with three bonus tracks. The band originally had wanted to record an EP of new material, but their label had insisted on a full-length album. To compromise, the band added several live tracks to pad the overall length.

A video was made for the song β€œTerminal Spirit Disease”.

Background:

Guitarist Anders BjΓΆrler commented that he couldn't "remember much" from the recording sessions for β€œTerminal Spirit Disease”. When compared to At the Gates' older material, BjΓΆrler felt the tracks "were simpler and more to the point". A violin and cello are featured on the song "And the World Returned", cited as an example of the group's attempt to explore "ideas which were a little different".

At the Gates have been deemed β€œthe band that saved Extreme Metal in the 90’s”. In an interview with Vice, Tomas Lindberg was asked how he felt about the band being labeled as such. This is what he had to say;

β€œYeah, if you β€˜re the kind of person or band that thinks of yourself in third person, that might be a problem. If you’re more humble and know who you are, I don’t think it’s such a big problem. I still see myself more as a music fan than a musician, really. I think I have a pretty big clue of our position in the extreme music scene, but there’s so many other bands that I feel deserve that kind of accolade more than us. I’m just happy that we get to play still, and that there’s still interest, and that we can be ourselves and write the music that we want to do without having to cater to some record company. We’re very fortunate in that position, and in that way, it’s stood with that reputation. But you have to not let it get to your head.”

Critical Reception:

Reviews for β€œTerminal Spirit Disease” have been mostly positive. AllMusic's Eduardo Rivadavia awards the album four out of five stars, and claims that, with this album, "At the Gates raised their creative stakes beyond most everyone's original expectations, and proved that what had once been a pretty standard and uninventive death metal combo was slowly becoming a true contender in the scene."
