25 years ago, Angra soared on the βWings of Realityβ!

On this day (July 14) in 1998, Angra released their third full-length album, βFireworksβ via Lucretia Records.

βFireworksβ was their last album to feature Andre Matos on vocals and LuΓs Mariutti on bass, and the last to feature drummer Ricardo Confessori until βAquaβ in 2010.

Background:
According to guitarist Kiko Loureiro, vocalist Andre Matos had decided to leave Angra right after the βHoly Liveβ tour to work on his solo project Virgo (a collaboration with Sascha Paeth), and the band had started to rehearse with Edu Falaschi as his probable replacement.

However, a French executive from the record company talked to them over dinner to help patch their differences. Even so, Kiko recalls feeling that Andre was distant, mostly working on his own compositions alone instead of collaborating with the other members.

Recording Information:
β’ Recorded at Metropolis and Rainmaker Studios, London, England, from April to June 1998.
β’ Additional recordings at Marcus Studios, London, June 1998.
β’ Orchestra recorded at Abbey Road Studios, London, May 1998.
β’ Mixed by Chris Tsangarides at Rainmaker Studios, June 1998.
β’ Mastered by Ian Cooper
β’ Cover concept by Ricardo Confessori
β’ Cover artwork & Sleeve design by Isabel de Amorium at Arsenic, Boulogne, France.

Critical Reception:
Writing for AllMusic, David Whiteβs retrospective review stated;
βAngra updates its sound once again with βFireworksβ, a more straightforward Metal record. Once again, Angra has made a successful, yet different, album. There is a good mix of fast and slow tracks. The album starts out blistering with "Wings of Reality" and "Petrified Eyes" before slowing down for the soft "Lisbon."

The next three songs, including the excellent "Mystery Machine," are all-out Rockers. The last four tracks alternate between fast and slow. Although this album features different influences than the previous albums, it continues Angra's history of making excellent Metal albums.β
