On this day (June 16) in 2017, Carach Angren released their fifth full-length studio album, Dance and Laugh Amongst the Rotten via Season of Mist.

Although the album doesn't follow a linear story as their previous albums did, it is still a concept album. Clemens "Ardek" Wijers describes the album's concept as visitations from multiple ghosts of the dead; including the "Blood Queen" and Charles Francis Coghlan. The full album is focused on a nameless girl who plays with a Ouija board causing her to raise a variety of spirits and ends up getting possessed. The album ends by informing the listener that the box the CD came in is haunted by these same spirits, and that by opening the album, the listener has also released them.

Overview:

โ€œDance and Laugh Amongst the Rottenโ€ strays away from the thematic issues dealt with in Carach Angrenโ€™s previous two albums, This Is No Fairytale and Where the Corpses Sink Forever. Although โ€œDance and Laugh Amongst the Rottenโ€ does adhere to the bands brand of macabre storytelling, the album also branches into new, uncharted domains.

The โ€œOpeningโ€ is a dark, foreboding number,

coming on like a film score for a theatrical thriller. Piano and symphonic arrangements give the track a feeling of malevolence. โ€œCharlieโ€ is like a virulent strain that has symptomatically spread throughout the whole of the album.

The all to compelling โ€œBlood Queenโ€ proves yet again that Carach Angren are the preeminent purveyors of terror. โ€œCharles Francis Coghlanโ€ is perfect representation of Carach Angren in their truest form, spinning a tragic tale through vivid narratives of a promising young actor before his untimely deathโ€ฆ a story which evokes powerful imagery!

โ€œSong For The Deadโ€ is another desolate and lugubrious refrain, while the following track, โ€œIn De Naam Van De Duivelโ€ is another jarring tale of calamity and sorrow, while โ€œPitch Black Boxโ€ is a comprehensive piece, acting as a segue for the whole album. โ€œThe Possession Processโ€ is a continuance of this demented saga, which was so methodically framed around โ€œDance and Laugh Amongst the Rottenโ€. The ominous โ€œThree Times Thunder Strikesโ€ brings this haunting tale to its finaleโ€ฆ for, in this twisted fairytale, there is no happily ever-after.

In conclusion; if you are fan of horror, I highly recommend that you listen to โ€œDance and Laugh Amongst the Rottenโ€ as it is suspenseful from start to finish. - E.N. Wells
