On this day (June 14) in 2010, Swedish Death Metal icons, Grave released their ninth full-length studio album โ€œBurial Groundโ€ via Regain Records.

Stylistically, โ€œBurial Groundโ€ showcases band moving in the same direction as their previous release, โ€œDominion VIIIโ€, where Grave had stepped back to the band's old-school Death Metal roots. In 2010, Fredrik Isaksson left the lineup and was replaced by Dismember's Tobias Cristiansson.

Nile founder/guitarist Karl Sanders performed lead guitars on the song โ€œBloodtrailโ€.

(2019 reissue with the wrong hype sticker applied)

Overview:

In 2010, Ola Lindgren, the founding and only constant member from Graveโ€™s original line up, returned with one of the bands heaviest efforts since โ€œBack from the Graveโ€. โ€œBurial Groundโ€ is yet another step back towards the bands classic Swedish Death Metal roots.

For those you who are not familiar with Grave, they are considered to be one of the "Big Four" of Swedish Death Metal, along with Dismember, Entombed and UNLEASHED. Many of which used the famously trademarked Tomas Skogsberg/Sunlight Studios "buzzsaw" guitar tone.

Now, I think you know exactly what to expect from โ€œBurial Groundโ€; gritty, buzzsaw-like guitar tones, โ€œpit-of-hellโ€ guttural growls, and that thick, sludgy, crusty, decaying down-tuned Swedish Death Metal tone that began it all.

Grave is a band that is known for uncompromising ferocity, even as the band steered away from their roots. With โ€œBurial Groundโ€ the band continues on where their previous release (Dominion VIII) left off; a return to their D-beat driven, rapid-fire, โ€œleave no grave unturnedโ€ attitude. On songs like "Dismembered Mind," "Sexual Mutilation," and "Bloodtrail", Ola spews gruesome tales of unfettered, hellish torment. In a victorious return to form, โ€œBurial Groundโ€ proves that Grave can still deliver unrestrained brutality. โ€” E.N. Wells

Noteworthy:

"Sexual Mutilation" is a a re-recording of a track from one of Graveโ€™s earliest demo tapes.
