On this day (June 15) in 1998, Soulburn released their debut full-length studio album Feeding on Angels via Century Media Records.

Background:

Originally Soulburn emerged after a first demise of Dutch Death Metal band Asphyx in the mid-90s, when founding members Eric Daniels (guitars) and Bob Bagchus (drums) looked for a separate outlet to unleash their mutual obsession with Bathory and Venom. After a demo, Soulburn released the cult favorite β€œFeeding On Angels” debut via Century Media Records in 1998, which featured Wannes Gubbels (Pentacle) on vocals and bass. Following its release, Soulburn were (momentarily) put to rest when Asphyx returned with On the Wings of Inferno in 2000 with the same line-up. 16 years after their debut album, Soulburn resurfaced with their new line-up featuring the core of Eric Daniels (guitars) and Bob Bagchus (drums), teaming with

Twan van Geel (Legion of the Damned) as vocalist/bassist and Remco Kreft (Nailgun Massacre) as the bands second guitarist.

Overview:

If you were an Asphyx fan like me, you were probably as disappointed as I was when the band originally called it a day. But, all was not lost, as Soulburn would arise from the ashes of Asphyx, delivering their blistering debut release β€œFeeding On Angels”.

(Eric Daniels - Guitars)

Now, I am not going to say something cheesy like β€œif you're a fan of Asphyx… blah, blah, blah… But, I will say that it has some of the classic Asphyx sound, albeit with a touch of Black Metal rolled into the mix. The core of the album has that trademarked Death-Doom aesthetic, although many of the tracks like β€œHellish Entrapment” have a Blackened feel. While songs like β€œHymn of the Forsaken” have a slower groove, more reminiscent of Asphyx. So, whether you are fan of Asphyx or not, you should definitely give β€œFeeding On Angels” a listen. And, if you don’t check it out… well, you suck! Haha, just kidding! Seriously, go check this album out. You won’t be disappointed! β€” E.N. Wells

Noteworthy:

The album was originally released in Europe only, all copies found in the US were imports.
