On this day (June 16) in 1992, Trouble released their fifth full-length studio album โ€œManic Frustrationโ€ via Def American.

The album marked a change in style toward a faster-paced, Psychedelic sound; as opposed to the slower, Doom Metal style on their previous albums.

Background:

Trouble embarked on a year-long tour in support of their self-titled release before returning to the studio to record โ€œManic Frustrationโ€.

The album found the band delving into Beatlesque psychedelia while also showcasing some of Trouble's most aggressive, energetic performances ever recorded. But after the album failed to connect with a wider audience, the band was ultimately dropped by Def American, which was already experiencing financial problems.

Critical Reception:

โ€œManic Frustrationโ€ was met with positive reviews. Retrospectively, AllMusicโ€™s Eduardo Rivadavia stated;

โ€œโ€ฆAnd so, one is inevitably drawn to the sheer guitar-shredding fantasy and frenzy of "Hello Strawberry Skies," the unsettling comedown and blissful return provided by the gentle "Breathe...," and the staggering majesty of "Memory's Garden" (all highlights of Trouble's career), where singer Eric Wagner's mournful bray spins a tale of loss, faith, and hope of simply chilling proportions. Sadly, none of these were capable of stopping Manic Frustration's title from ringing horribly prophetic after its release, when Trouble once again faced the mixed blessings of widespread critical acclaim but no significant album sales beyond the underground Heavy Metal faithful.โ€

While Sputnikmusic.com said also in retrospect;

โ€œManic Frustrationโ€ was a brave step forward for Trouble and easily their most accomplished album before or since its release. It is a very well crafted and polished album that could easily be considered their most commercially palatable effort.โ€
