33 years ago today, the โChanging of the Guardโ was โA.W.O.L.โ leaving the โLunatic Paradeโ to run amok โWithin the Walls of Chaosโ!
On this day (June 21) in 1990, Bay Area Trashers , Exodus released their fourth full-length studio album โImpact Is Imminentโ via Capital Records.
Background:
After the success of โFabulous Disasterโ, Exodus signed a multi-album deal with Capitol Records in 1989. โImpact Is Imminentโ was Exodus' first album to be released via Capitol Records as well as their first album to feature John Tempesta on drums.
The band released two singles to promote the album. The first single was Objection Overruled, of which a music video was also filmed and aired on MTV's Headbangers Ball.
The second single was for the song "The Lunatic Parade".
It was also the last studio album to feature Rob McKillop on bass, though he appeared on their first live album, โGood Friendly Violent Funโ, which was recorded live in 1989 but not released until 1991.
Guitarist Gary Holt expressed some regret for the album during the making of 2010โs โExhibit B: The Human Conditionโ, stating that "if there was one album I could have back and record again it would be โImpactโ." He went on to praise the album for having "some of the best riffs I've ever written."
Holt restated his opinion of the record during an April 2020 interview with Robb Flynn of Machine Head; "I listen back to โImpact Is Imminentโ, and if thereโs one album in my career I wish... I had it back, like itโd never been released, itโs that album, because itโs got some of the best riffs I ever wrote. I mean, the main riff to โImpact Is Imminentโ is my favorite riff Iโve ever written. Itโs crazy, the string skipping, no one had ever done that shit."
Tour:
Exodus spent the latter half of 1990 touring in support of โImpact Is Imminentโ. The band opened for Funk Rock act Red Hot Chili Peppers (who were labelmates with Exodus at the time) at The Kaiser Center in Oakland on July 21, 1990.
Exodus was part of two major tours; in August 1990, they toured the U.S. with Suicidal Tendencies and Pantera (who had just released the most successful records of their respective careers; โLights...Camera...Revolution!โ and โCowboys from Hellโ), and three months later, they toured Europe with Flotsam and Jetsam, Vio-Lence and Forbidden.
Some sources say that Exodus wrapped up the tour on December 28, 1990 at The Fillmore, but is no evidence to corroborate this. Although there is evidence that they played at The Warfield in San Francisco, CA with Mordred, followed by a gig at Jezebel's in Anaheim, CA with Mordred & Kill-Era.
Exodus' final show of the tour was at Iguana's in Tijuana, Mexico with Mordred & Mausoleum.
The band was scheduled to tour in early 1991 with Judas Priest and Annihilator on the European โPainkillerโ tour, but they were dropped from the tour and replaced by Pantera because their label refused to pay tour support.
Critical Reception:
โImpact Is Imminentโ received a negative review from AllMusic's Eduardo Rivadavia, who called it "the most forgettable album of Exodus' career."
Canadian journalist Martin Popoff appreciated Exodus' "adherence to an older, lost speed metal rant" and wrote that fans might want to come back and revisit songs that were quickly skipped in favour of more "pushier works".
Despite being released on a major label, โImpact Is Imminentโ was not as successful as โFabulous Disasterโ and debuted at No. 137 on the Billboard 200, Exodus' lowest chart position to date. Until the release of โBlood In, Blood Outโ In 2014, โImpact Is Imminentโ would be Exodus' last album to enter the Billboard 200.
