On this day (June 14) in 1989, Obituary released their debut full-length studio album โ€œSlowly We Rotโ€ via Roadrunner Records.

It is the only Obituary album to feature bassist Daniel Tucker. Lead guitarist Allen West would leave soon after but returned for the third album โ€œThe End Completeโ€.

Despite being recorded in standard tuning and with a Fender Stratocasters, it is considered to be one of the band's heavier efforts. The remainder of the band's output has been recorded in D tuning.

The album was re-released on January 27, 1997 with remastered sound and liner notes.

Overview:

Every so often, a debut release comes out so strong that it is deemed a paragon of its contemporaries. And, Obituary achieved this marvelous feat with their sensational showpiece, โ€œSlowly We Rotโ€, one of Death Metals most significant albums since the inception of the genre.

There is no denying how pivotal Obituary have become due to this seminal masterpiece. I personally consider โ€œSlowly We Rotโ€ to be one the most quintessential releases in the realm of Death Metal, and there are many who would agree. Since itโ€™s release, โ€œSlowly We Rotโ€ has set a precedent that consequently, many have strived to achieve.

One of the great many factors to the success of โ€œSlowly We Rotโ€ was that it had a distinctive quality. Obituary sounds like no one, and no one else sounds like them. John Tardy's distinguishable Death growls have become the criterion to which many have been judged. The intensity and sheer power of his anguish filled screams are both, awe-inspiring and bloodcurdling. From the heavy-handed down picked grooves on songs like albums title track or โ€˜Til Deathโ€ to the many ultra fast, full-on gallop sections as in songs like โ€œInternal Bleedingโ€, Allen West and Trevor Peres have created some of Metals heaviest riffs.

There are variety of influences to be found within โ€œSlowly We Rotโ€. From grinding, sludge filled rhythms, to rapid-fire Thrash fueled riffs, to Donald Tardyโ€™s flirtations with Hardcore Punk, the bands multifaceted attack adds an insurmountable dynamic to each and every song. The mere fact that Obituary could take all of these formulas and transform them into something so much more aggressive and so unique, is a testament to the band, and to the genre of Death Metal.

In conclusion; โ€œSlowly We Rotโ€ stands the test of time, and Iโ€™ll put it up against any new album released today. It is a must have for any fan of Death Metal. โ€” E.N. Wells
